چکیده

The purpose of this paper to analyze in some detail the arguably simplest case of diversityinduced reseonance: that of a system of globally-coupled linear oscillators subjected to a periodic forcing. Diversity appears as the parameters characterizing each oscillator, namely its mass, internal frequency and damping coefficient are drawn from a probability distribution. The main ingredients for the diversity-induced-resonance phenomenon are present in this system as the oscillators display a variability in the individual responses but are induced, by the coupling, to synchronize their responses. A steady state solution for this model is obtained. We also determine the conditions under which it is possible to find a resonance effect.

System size resonance in coupled noisy systems and in the Ising model.

We consider an ensemble of coupled nonlinear noisy oscillators demonstrating in the thermodynamic limit an Ising-type transition. In the ordered phase and for finite ensembles stochastic flips of the mean field are observed with the rate depending on the ensemble size. When a small periodic force acts on the ensemble, the linear response of the system has a maximum at a certain system size, sim...

Nonuniversal results induced by diversity distribution in coupled excitable systems.

We consider a system of globally coupled active rotators near the excitable regime. The system displays a transition to a state of collective firing induced by disorder. We show that this transition is found generically for any diversity distribution with well-defined moments. Singularly, for the Lorentzian distribution (widely used in Kuramoto-like systems) the transition is not present. This ...

Phase synchronization and noise-induced resonance in systems of coupled oscillators

We study synchronization and noise-induced resonance phenomena in systems of globally coupled oscillators, each possessing finite inertia. The behavior of the order parameter, which measures the collective synchronization of the system, is investigated as the noise level and the coupling strength are varied, and hysteretic behavior is manifested. The power spectrum of the phase velocity is also...

Synchronization in a population of globally coupled chaotic oscillators

– We demonstrate synchronization transition in a large ensemble of non-identical chaotic oscillators, globally coupled via the mean field. We show that this coherent behaviour is due to synchronization of phases of these oscillators, while their amplitudes remain chaotic. Two types of transition, depending on the phase coherence properties of the individual systems, are described. A number of p...

Noise effects on synchronized globally coupled oscillators

– The synchronized phase of globally coupled identical nonlinear oscillators subject to noise fluctuations is studied by means of a new analytical approach able to tackle general couplings, nonlinearities, and noise temporal correlations. Our results show that the interplay between coupling and noise modifies the effective frequency of the system in a nontrivial way. Whereas for linear coupling...
